Peter Claver Center Karate Vikings 35th Annual Awards Banquet

    The Peter Claver Center Karate Vikings 35th Annual Awards Banquet was held Saturday, January 3, at the new Peter Claver Center, 172 South Chicago Street, Joliet, IL.  In attendance were Master Sydney Bennett, Master Ozzie Mitchell, Master Peggy Mitchell, Master Jack Cummings, many karate students and their families, as well as supporters and well wishers from the community.  Awards were given out in many categories.  Individuals who have supported the Peter Claver Center and the karate team were recognized and awarded custom engraved plaques in gratitude for their efforts.  The year's top ten competitors were recognized as well.  Entertainment included a dance by Kimberly Sims, and a smooth jazz rendition of 'Do you hear what I hear?' by Christine Sims.  Both performances were absolutely wonderful.  Karate students performed basic and advanced katas.  Speakers included Charlie Drew, Patti Wilson, and Carol Ferguson who spoke on the positive attributes of the Peter Claver Center, and the martial arts.  Master Ozzie Mitchell was surprised by a birthday cake as everyone sang "Happy Birthday Dear Sensei".  A buffet dinner was catered and after a sumptuous gourmet meal, attendees danced the Viking dance and continued to enjoy the good fellowship of the community until the late hours.
